Day 69 Hitching Post

I saw this clever little guy outside a house in Lincoln, NM which has now become a restaurant and gift shop. Lincoln is know for being a place where Billy the Kid hung out.

Day 68 Yucca

Yucca plants grow everywhere here. Funny thing is, as the sand covers them and they just keep growing taller. Exposure was very difficult here. I found I was shooting +1 to +2 using exposure compensation. Very similar to shoot in snow actually.

Day 67 Sand Dunes

Here is one of the dunes that I photographed. This one required a 2 1/2 hr. hike up and down dunes. No easy task while carrying a tripod and two cameras. But it was worth every step. This was actually the first dune we shot that day and one of the smallest. I shot this one in black and white. Be sure to click on it to see the marvelous jump pattern of the sand. That is something new that I learned; the patterns are formed by the distance the sand moves and are called jumped patterns.

Day 66 White Sands National Monument

Hello, from White Sands. Wow, what a wonderful place to photograph! I have blisters on my feet from hiking here, but it has been worth every painful step. My knees are finally used to crawling up and down the dunes. I can not praise Craig Varjabedian enough for this fantastic experience. I have so many images to share. The dune area is 10miles by 20 miles, so it is big. We hiked in 2 1/2 miles one way the first day to get some good shot of ‘clean’ dunes, meaning with no human footprints.  It is spring break here, so the dunes are covered with young people. They use ‘flying saucers’ to go down the snow-like dunes. What fun!! I am almost tempted to try it.  The image here is of Yucca plants which are very abundant.

Day 65 Red Planet Diner Special

We finally made it to the Red Planet Diner. The special was this Chicken Noodle Bowl and was it ever good. Walter had his usual greasy burger and fries. He assured me that it was as good as usual.

Day 64 Traveling in the Rain

Nothing like hitting a rain storm on our way back to snow and cold back home, especially when your windshield wipers quit working.

Day 63 Big Dune

Here is a telephoto shot of the Big Dune with the 70-300. It was a beautiful golden light morning for sure. Wish we had had time to get closer and spend some real time there. A place I will definitely be returning to.

Day 62 Better Than Snow

Heading to Kingman and then on to St. George. The rain is finally moving in and we will miss it in Sedona. Sure enough, waves of heavy rain hit right outside of Kingman, as you can see. We are so dreading the cold, snowy winter back home. I guess we were truly snowbirds for a couple of months And it was good.

Day 61 What Does a Devil’s Corn Field Look Like?

Interesting place, isn’t it? This is Death Valley’s Devil’s Cornfield. Just a hop and skip from the Mesquite Dunes and still in the golden early morning light.

Day 60 Mesquite Dunes in the Early Morning

Our first stop in Death Valley was at the Mesquite Dunes. As you can see, we were not alone. This is the lower dune field where there are less people and a whole lot less in the way of foot prints. Photographers hope for overnight winds to erase evidence of the previous day’s treks.  No such luck for us though.
